I just wanted to get some rest.

I really did try pretty much everything to sleep. In 2017, I picked up I Can Make You Sleep: Overcome Insomnia Forever and Get the Best Rest of Your Life! Book and CD by Paul McKenna from the library.

I will be honest, I don’t remember much about it. One piece of helpful advice was something along the lines of this: if you have racing thoughts, set a time limit. For the next 10 minutes, I will only think about this thing that’s bothering me.

But that could have been from another book.

I listened to the CD. I think he spoke on it, it wasn’t just music. Even though I listen to podcasts every night, I just couldn’t listen to the CD. Too many sitcoms in the 90s had the gag of “listen to something silly subliminally while you sleep.” Something inside me worried that at the one hour mark, the CD would get weird.

Maybe I should revisit this book. I’d be curious what it has to say in light of my treatment. However, Wikipedia provides this fun bit of information:

In 1996, McKenna was granted a PhD from LaSalle University in Louisiana. It was legally licensed by the state, but it falsely claimed to be an accredited institution.[14] The school exempted McKenna from coursework based on his prior work, and his dissertation was producing a series of self-help tapes that eventually became a book, Change Your Life in Seven Days.[15]

Discovery of this lack of accreditation prompted McKenna to obtain another PhD in 2003 from Revans University, an online institution based out of the Republic of Vanuatu.[15][16] Revans’s accredited status was revoked in 2005 when it was discovered that students did not require the normal level of dedicated research in order to earn their degrees, and instead a legal loophole was being exploited.[17]

Not to impugn the Republic of Vanuatu, but, uh, what.

So maybe not.
