You are the night-time fear
You are the morning when it’s clearYou want a revelation
You want to get right
But it’s a conversation
I just can’t have tonight
You want a revelation
Some kind of resolution
You want a revelation–“No Light, No Light,” Florence & the Machine
Oh, my life
Is changin’ every day
In every possible way
And oh, my dreams
It’s never quite as it seems
‘Cause you’re a dream to me, dream to me–“Dreams,” The Cranberries
I was driving home from work, idly thinking about The Cranberries. I never really cared for them, but damn if their songs aren’t catchy. So even if I was listening to a podcast or The Decemberists, I started singing “‘Cause you’re a dream to me.”
Which made me think about “All I Have to do is Dream” by The Everly Brothers. And I laughed to myself, all these songs about a lover being a dream or about going to sleep to dream of them.
“Oh boy sleep! That’s where I’m a viking!” Oh Ralph!
At the stoplight, IT hit me. Most people do have good dreams. Most people who remember their dreams have pleasant ones. There is a literal reason we say “Sweet dreams!” when someone goes to bed.
I felt like those people who post on Reddit, “Don’t you hate it how bananas are spicy?” and then they learn they are allergic to bananas. Like haha this is a little fiction we’ve all agreed to.
The light turned green and I cried the rest of the way home.
